Car enthusiasts often wonder which wheels are better - cast or stamped. There is no definite answer to this question, and therefore heated debates around the choice of disks still do not subside. In this article we will try to understand the pros and cons of each type of disc, and also consider in what cases they should be chosen.

What are stamped discs

This the most common type of discs, which initially, from the factory, cost more than 80% of passenger cars. The cheaper the car, the more likely it is stamped discs or just stamping on its wheels.

Forged discs are made, usually from ordinary steel. In the first step, a round steel sheet is taken and placed under a specially tuned press. He gives the sheet a curly shape with great pressure. It turns out the so-called plate - a disc body that connects the rim to the hub.

What are alloy wheels

Production of alloy wheels is much more complicated. If stampings can be done on cheap, simple equipment, then for cast ones, expensive high-tech machines are needed. In such discs, there are no separate plates and rims, as well as joints. The cast disc is a solid metal body.

Typically an aluminum-magnesium alloy is used for alloy wheels. For this, aluminum and magnesium ingots are placed in a special oven in the required proportion, where they melt at a high temperature. The melt is poured into a complex shape and cooled, resulting in an almost finished disc. “Almost” - because such a product is far from ideal. It is brought to a condition by machining, in other words, it is grinded on a machine. This achieves very precise geometric characteristics of the disc.

The final stage is the same as in the production of stampings - a short test for quality and coating with any compound. It can be paint or a transparent anti-corrosion mixture. It happens that such discs are not painted, but pasted over with decor.

What is the difference between alloy wheels and stamped ones

The main principle of stamping is “cheap and cheerful”. There are also expensive models, but there is no special sense in them, because then it is wiser to take cast ones. However, this does not mean that stamped discs are taken at only a small price. They have other advantages as well:

  • good crushing ability on impact, which can serve as additional protection for the suspension;
  • high maintainability - to kill the stamping to an unrecoverable state, you need to try hard;
  • rather good mechanical strength, which allows them to be used on cargo and passenger vehicles.

But their disadvantages are significant. This is a large mass, which makes the car slower picking up speed, reduced handling, and also low resistance to rust. Sometimes 2-3 years are enough for red spots to appear on the disc. Finally, the stampings are not beautiful in appearance. This can be masked with caps, but this is extra money and extra weight.

Therefore, if a car enthusiast is seriously concerned about the aesthetic side of his car, it makes sense to take a closer look at alloy wheels. Their varieties - an unimaginable number, due to the flexibility of the production process. You can find suitable options for both a solid representative sedan and an aggressive sports car. Well, other advantages of alloy wheels also play a role:

  • they are noticeably lighter, thanks to which the car accelerates a little faster and holds the road more tenaciously;
  • the aluminum-magnesium alloy is absolutely immune to corrosive processes;
  • due to the nature of the manufacturing process, the balancing of alloy wheels is much better;
  • In theory, their low weight contributes to fuel economy.

Disadvantages of alloy wheels - as if a mirror image of the merits of stampings. First of all, it is the price. Alloy wheels are at least 2-3 times more expensive than stamped ones. They are also more expensive in service. Damage is not so easy and cheap to repair, and sometimes you have to solder them, and this is a time-consuming procedure. Moreover, the strength of cast disks is lower than that of stampings. Finally, they are just stiffer, and therefore transmit the slightest bumps in the road to the suspension.

Which is better - alloy wheels or stamped

For a start, it would be good to think whether the problem of choice is worth it at all. For example, large-capacity cars such as buses, trucks and special equipment are equipped with stamped discs. Yes, on the Internet you can find photos of truck tractors with alloy wheels, but this is almost exclusive with an exorbitant price.

In the end, stamped discs consistently do their job well, and their cheapness manifests itself not only in purchase, but also in the process of use. Up to the possibility of saving on the purchase of bolts - they are completely standard for stampings. Alloy wheels often require original, non-standard bolts with an original price tag.

So for most passenger cars stamped discs are enough, especially if the task is to squeeze the maximum practicality out of the car - freight and passenger transportation, trips to and from work. The only thing that darkens the triumph of rationality of stampings is their vulnerability to rust. But they can withstand several years of intensive use.

But if you want something more than practicality, you want individuality and beauty - then alloy wheels are an excellent choice. For a luxury car, this is the only possible option, because stamping on such machines looks completely inappropriate. The same is the case with powerful cars with a sporty character. For the increased dynamics and controllability of alloy wheels, their inherent disadvantages can be forgiven.
